Accurate tank inventory calculations depend not only on liquid level but also on product temperature and, in many hydrocarbon applications, the location of the water interface. Motherwell MTG LATIS is a combined multi-element thermometer and water-interface sensor constructed for bulk liquid storage and custody-transfer tank gauging. Combining these measurements in one suspended probe can simplify instrumentation around the tank and provide data needed for more reliable inventory calculations.
LATIS uses multiple temperature elements distributed along the probe together with an active water-interface section near the lower end. Current versions are available with copper or Pt100 temperature elements, while the water-interface signal is provided as 4–20 mA. The immersed parts use materials including AISI 316 stainless steel, PTFE/FEP and Viton to provide chemical resistance across a broad range of stored liquids.
Current Motherwell data states temperature accuracy of ±0.15 °C plus 0.002 × |t| °C and water-interface accuracy of ±2 mm or ±0.25% of active probe length. The probe is published for tank heights from 2 to 100 m, operating temperature from −20 to +80 °C and pressure up to 6 bar without a thermowell or up to 450 psi with a thermowell. ATEX intrinsically safe certification is available, but the exact element count, probe length, connection and material compatibility must be selected for the application.
For tank-farm operators, combining temperature and water-interface measurement can reduce separate penetrations and simplify the data path into the tank-gauging system. Better temperature and water-bottom information supports stock reconciliation, transfer accounting and early identification of unwanted water accumulation. AxFlow can help specify LATIS against tank height, product compatibility, process connection and integration requirements, and can support service and spare-parts planning.
