Product description

Thermal expansion can impose significant axial loads on long straight pipe runs, increasing stress on piping, supports and connected equipment. MACOGA MWA & MFA expansion joints provide a compact way to absorb this movement where the piping layout has been engineered with the necessary main anchors, directional anchors and guides. They are particularly relevant in process plants, power generation, petrochemical systems, utilities and other installations where axial thermal growth must be controlled without relying on pipe flexibility alone.

The design uses one metallic bellows element with end connections. MWA versions are supplied with welding ends, while MFA versions use fixed flanges. The bellows flexes to accommodate axial compression and extension; however, because these are unrestrained expansion joints, they do not contain pressure thrust. Correct anchor sizing, pipe alignment and guiding are therefore essential parts of the system design, and the joint must not be treated as a substitute for proper piping restraint.

MACOGA manufactures metallic expansion joints in accordance with recognised design frameworks including EJMA, ASME VIII Division 1 Appendix 26 and EN 14917. The wider MACOGA circular metal expansion-joint manufacturing range extends from 15 to 10,000 mm diameter, while MWA/MFA units are engineered to suit the individual piping duty, movement, pressure, temperature, materials and connection requirements. Liners, covers and other accessories can be specified where the process or installation requires them.

Correctly selected expansion joints can reduce thermal stresses and help protect adjoining piping and equipment, but lifecycle performance depends strongly on installation quality. MWA & MFA are primarily intended to absorb axial compression and extension in a pipe run. A single bellows can physically respond to other movement components, but the installation concept is normally based on axial movement. The complete piping layout, anchors and guides must therefore be checked before selection.
No, MWA & MFA are unrestrained expansion joints and do not contain pressure thrust. Main and directional anchors plus correctly positioned guides are required to manage the resulting forces. AxFlow can help review the application data before a unit is specified.
