Conveying High Viscosity Butter with Waukesha Rotary Piston Pumps

Conveying cold, high-viscosity butter is a demanding task — but not for Waukesha rotary piston pumps. In this project, AxFlow delivered a hygienic, custom-engineered pumping solution that ensures smooth, pulsation-free feeding of butter mass to the packaging process, even at extreme viscosities and low temperatures.

Customer: Dairy
Industry: Food & Beverage
Application: Feeding a butter packaging machine
Product: Waukesha Cherry-Burrell Universal 2
Category: Rotary Piston Pumps

High-performance pumps for the dairy

A large dairy in Germany relies on hygienic rotary piston pumps from Waukesha Cherry-Burrell, supplied by AxFlow, to process butter at 4 °C to 8 °C. The butter machine produces up to 10 tons of butter mass per hour, which is temporarily stored in a silo. The pumps achieve a flow rate of up to 150 m³/h and supply the downstream packaging systems efficiently and evenly.

The hygienic Waukesha U2 rotary piston pumps with a rectangular flange are used in a large German dairy to convey highly viscous butter mass to the packaging machine.

Conveying solution for high-viscosity butter at low temperatures

Rotary piston pump in vertical installation on butter siloThe processing of butter at 4 °C requires pump technology that works reliably even at extremely high viscosity. The rotary piston pumps used enable almost pulsation-free and gentle delivery. With a delivery pressure of up to 34.5 bar, they can easily handle the viscous butter mass with viscosities of up to 1,000,000 mPas.

The oversized drive shafts ensure reliable power transmission with high torque – ideal for handling highly viscous media. The rotors of the Waukesha rotary piston pumps are made of a special stainless steel alloy that prevents tilting in the event of sudden pressure surges. In addition, the pumps are equipped with an enlarged inlet flange to minimize the risk of cavitation. As a result, the flow rate remains stable even under difficult conditions. All components are certified for hygienic use (EHEDG, EC1935/2004, 3-A).

Customer-specific design by AxFlow

AxFlow supplied the Waukesha rotary piston pumps as a pre-assembled, ready-to-use unit including drive, which simplified commissioning on site. In order to do justice to the high viscosity of the cold butter mass, the pumps were installed vertically and as close as possible to the silo. In addition, AxFlow equipped the pumps with an inlet hopper to support the supply of the viscous butter mass.
