Key product features

  • Flexible wedge → reduces seat rubbing and helps maintain reliable shut-off through thermal and pressure cycling.
  • Hardfaced, ground and lapped seats → improve resistance to erosion and wear in demanding isolation service.
  • Guided wedge movement → limits scuffing and seat damage, supporting longer valve life.
  • Non-rotating stem → reduces rotational wear in the packing and operating components.
  • API 600 and ASME B16.34 design basis → supports specification for established industrial piping standards.
  • NPS 2–64 (DN 50–1600) range → covers small process lines through large-bore isolation duties.
  • ASME Classes 150–1500 → enables selection across a broad range of pressure requirements.
  • Cast steel body options → allow material selection to suit temperature, corrosion and process conditions.
  • Precision-machined body and bonnet joint → supports consistent alignment and sealing integrity.
  • Serviceable trim and packing components → support planned maintenance and lifecycle management.

Product Description

Velan API 600 Cast Steel Gate Valves are built for on/off isolation in demanding industrial piping systems, including high-pressure steam, refining, petrochemical and other severe process services. The gate-valve configuration provides an essentially unobstructed flow path when fully open, helping minimise pressure loss in applications where the valve is intended primarily for isolation rather than throttling. AxFlow can support valve selection against line size, pressure class, medium, temperature, materials and actuation requirements.

The valve uses a flexible wedge that is accurately guided to reduce seat rubbing and scuffing during operation. Velan specifies hardfaced seating surfaces that are ground and lapped, together with a non-rotating stem and precision-machined body and bonnet joint. This construction is intended to improve sealing consistency, reduce wear at the seating surfaces and support dependable operation through repeated thermal and pressure cycles.

Current Velan data lists the API 600 cast steel gate valve range from NPS 2 to 64 (DN 50 to 1600) in ASME pressure classes 150 to 1500 with flanged connections. The range is designed to API 600 and ASME B16.34 requirements, with material and trim options available for different process conditions. The correct body, wedge, seat, stem and packing materials must be selected for the actual fluid, temperature, corrosion and pressure duty.

For maintenance and lifecycle planning, the guided flexible wedge, renewable stem-nut arrangement on applicable sizes and hardfaced seating surfaces can help control wear and extend service intervals when the valve is correctly selected and operated. Spare parts, packing, trim and actuator requirements should be evaluated against the exact valve configuration and service history. AxFlow can help identify the appropriate Velan configuration, service approach and replacement option to reduce downtime risk and support long-term plant reliability.

They are intended primarily for on/off isolation in demanding industrial piping systems such as steam, refining, petrochemical and other process services. The flexible-wedge and hardfaced-seat construction is particularly relevant where pressure and temperature cycling can affect sealing surfaces. AxFlow can help confirm the correct pressure class, materials and actuation for the actual duty.
Current Velan data lists sizes from NPS 2 to 64, corresponding to DN 50 to 1600. The API 600 cast steel range is available in ASME pressure classes 150 through 1500 with flanged connections. Exact availability depends on material, trim and project specification, so the required configuration should be confirmed before ordering.
Gate valves are primarily selected for full-open or full-closed isolation rather than continuous throttling. Operating for long periods in partially open positions can increase velocity and local wear at the wedge and seats. If flow regulation is required, AxFlow can help assess a more suitable valve type for the control duty.
Material selection should be based on the process medium, pressure, temperature, corrosion risk and applicable plant specification. Velan offers different body, wedge, seat, stem and trim materials for different service conditions. AxFlow can review the duty data and help identify the appropriate configuration before quotation.
AxFlow can support identification of the correct Velan valve, spare parts and service requirements using the valve configuration and operating data. Replacement projects should verify dimensions, pressure class, materials, end connections and actuator interfaces rather than assume direct interchangeability.
