Four basic challenges exist when pumping gel:
- Gels are extremely shear-sensitive, requiring pumps that reliably deliver a low shear rate.
- Gel properties can be changed quite considerably by temperature.
- Many gels require an extremely high level of hygiene and contact with the external atmosphere could compromise the gel's properties making it imperative that care is taken over the seal arrangement.
- Easy cleanability and maintenance is essential.
